It's a day where you can be with someone who works in the career you might want to have in the future.
Who did I shadow? Where did I go?
I shadowed my aunt who works at UT San Diego.
What is this persons schedule?
There's not an exact schedule, but every Friday there is a deadline. Every Friday my aunt accepts returns. Accepting returns is where a distributor is given 500 papers. They distribute papers wherever they want. Every week they take back papers that weren't sold. Every Thursday is when they return papers. At 10 am is my aunts deadline to accept the distributors returns.
What does a typical day look like?
-checks all emails and voice messages -answers phone calls
Work Policies?
Electronic Time Cards:
Tardiness is understandable, as long as it doesn't become a habit.
What is the purpose of this organization?
Publication. Write the news. Produce newspapers.
What education is needed (if any)?
High School Diploma or higher level of education.
What skills and training is needed?
-office experience -detail-oriented -grammar and math -organization -communication skills
In what ways do you expect your high school classes and the skills you have learned to apply to this profession?
I feel like being detailed, grammar, math, organization, and communication skills are all good examples of skills that I learn in high school will be effective in the profession I shadowed.
What new insight did you gain about working in the professional world by shadowing your mentor?
I feel like I have a new perspective on office work. I thought it was extremely boring and all paperwork. It kinda is, except there are some other things. There are perks and some negative things about office work. The perks can be the people and the organizing, in my opinion. I got to meet some wonderful people that really loved that I was there with my aunt. I also loved organizing some binders. There was a lot of paperwork that was needed in alphabetical order. I actually felt like I was doing part of my aunts job and it gave me a new perspective on her. In my opinion the downfalls are the considerably short break times and working at a computer almost the whole time. I'd feel lonely, not getting to talk to someone the majority of the time.
Is this a career you are interested in pursuing? Why/why not? I would not pursue this career because I would not like sitting at a computer all day. My aunt only gets one hour of break time, but she is so hard working she only takes about half an hour for her break. I would not be able to do that. I would embrace my break as long as possible.
What would you like to keep in mind for Career Day 2015? (What would you have done differently this year? What do you want to make sure for next year?)
I would want to make sure that I do a career that I'm actually interested in. I say this because I already knew that working on a computer doing office work all day was for me. I like being social, but hard working.
